Grounding Grid Extension

KDM Constructors was chosen as the proponent of choice for the Grounding Grid Extension project at BHP Jansen in 2018. An addition to the existing grounding grid around the 25kV substation was required to decrease the impedance of the current system. While quite a simple project on paper, this work required several key coordination items and layers of approvals. Additionally, the crew’s proximity to the 25kV sub-station required stringent safety measures to be place. The grounding grid extension scope was as follows:

  • Perform ground scans and line locates
  • Hydrovac to expose existing buried utilities
  • Trench layout using skid steer and chain trench attachment
  • Install 8 grounding rods and ~260m of ground cable runs
  • Fall of Potential testing to measure grounding grid resistance
  • Backfilling and compacting of the trench
  • Re-seeding of the area

Even through inclement weather delays, KDM was able to complete this project ahead of schedule. Most importantly, there were no injuries or illnesses on this project.
